The idea of a massage therapist coming to your villa sounds wonderful right up until the practical questions start: who exactly is arriving, where do they set up, what are you supposed to wear, and is it rude not to tip? We answer these on WhatsApp a dozen times a day, so here is the honest version — everything we wish first-time guests knew before the doorbell rings. None of it is complicated, but knowing it in advance turns a slightly nervous booking into a genuinely relaxing hour.

Booking and Confirmation

Most first bookings start with a single WhatsApp message — the service you want, roughly when, and your villa or hotel name. We reply with the price, confirm the therapist and time, and ask for a pin or the property name so the therapist can find the gate. There is no app to download and no deposit for standard bookings. Same-day sessions usually work with two to three hours' notice; the busy sunset slots and couples sessions are worth booking a day ahead. If you are in a large villa complex in Canggu or down a quiet lane in Ubud, a quick note about the access point saves everyone ten minutes.

The Therapist Arrives

Your therapist comes on a scooter or in a car carrying everything the session needs: a professional folding massage table, fresh linens and towels, a selection of oils, and often a small speaker for soft music. You provide nothing but the space. They will greet you, ask where you would like to set up, and a quick word about pressure and any problem areas — a sore lower back, a stiff neck from the flight, anything off-limits. This thirty-second conversation matters more than people think; it is how a generic massage becomes the one your body actually needed.

Where the Table Goes

The most popular question, and the answer is: wherever you feel most comfortable. A shaded terrace with a garden view is the classic Bali choice, and on a still evening it is hard to beat. Poolside works beautifully at sunset. If the afternoon heat is heavy or the mosquitoes are out, an air-conditioned bedroom is perfectly normal and often the better call. The therapist needs roughly two by two metres of flat floor and a power point only if you have booked hot stone. Everything else they bring.

A note on privacy. You undress to your comfort level under a towel or sarong, and the therapist drapes you so that only the area being worked on is ever uncovered. Professional draping is standard for every session — if anything ever feels off, you are always free to say so and stop.

During the Session

Once you are settled face-down on the table, the work begins gently and builds. Speak up at any point — warmer or cooler room, firmer or lighter pressure, more time on the shoulders, less on the feet. A good therapist reads your body, but words remove all guesswork. Many first-timers worry about falling asleep or, less charmingly, about the rumble of a relaxing stomach; both happen constantly and neither bothers anyone. If you have chosen a classic Balinese massage, expect long flowing strokes and gentle stretching; deep tissue goes slower and firmer into specific knots.

Afterwards — Tipping and Etiquette

When the hour ends, the therapist steps out so you can dress, then packs up quickly. You will feel a little floaty and possibly very thirsty, so drink water and avoid the temptation to leap straight onto a scooter. On payment: cash in IDR is easiest, and many guests find it convenient to have it ready. Tipping is never required — our prices are flat and honest, and they flow through to fair therapist pay — but if you loved the session, ten to fifteen percent in cash is always warmly received. A simple thank-you and a smile go a long way too; Balinese hospitality runs both directions.

Common First-Timer Worries, Briefly

"Is it safe to have someone in my villa?" Our therapists are vetted, certified and regular faces in the south Bali villa scene. "What if I don't like it?" Tell the therapist mid-session — pressure and focus are adjustable in real time. "Do I need to clean up first?" No, just clear a small flat space. "Can my partner book at the same time?" Yes — that is exactly what the couples service is, two therapists and two tables at once. Anything we have not covered is one message away, and the full menu and rates live on the pricing page.

That is genuinely all there is to it. The first villa massage is the one people remember years later — usually as the moment a holiday turned from busy to restful. Once you have had a therapist come to you, the spa down the road never quite competes again.
