Most massages are designed to wind you down. This one is designed to switch you on. A pre-surf warm-up is a completely different animal from a recovery session: it is fast, light and purposeful, built to raise tissue temperature, wake up the muscles you are about to use and open the joints surfing demands — all in the 30 to 60 minutes before you paddle out. Think of it as the warm-up a pro athlete gets before they compete: brushing, percussion and assisted dynamic stretching to prime the shoulders for paddling, free the spine for the pop-up, open the hips for your stance and loosen the ankles for board control. You leave the table ready to surf, not ready to nap. If you booked a dawn patrol and want your body ready before first light, this is the session.
The Surfing Muscles We Target
Thoracic Spine Rotation
A stiff mid-back kills your pop-up and your turns. We mobilise thoracic rotation and extension so the spine moves freely the moment you spring to your feet on the first wave — no cold, sticky first ten minutes.
Shoulders & Rotator Cuff
Cold shoulders are the easiest thing to tweak on the first hard paddle out. We warm and mobilise the rotator cuff, deltoids and the whole paddling shoulder so it is firing and ready, not stiff and vulnerable.
Hip Flexors & Hip Openers
The crouched surf stance needs open, mobile hips. We dynamically stretch the hip flexors and open the hips so you drop into a lower, stronger stance from your very first wave instead of warming into it over an hour.
Ankle Mobility
Board control comes from the ankles. We mobilise the ankle joint and lower leg so your feet move freely on the deck — sharper pop-ups, better balance and quicker adjustments from the start of the session.
Pairs Well With These Sessions
The warm-up is the front half of a smart surf day; the back half is recovery. Book this before you paddle out, then a surf recovery massage for the evening after a big session to flush everything you just worked. If a specific knot has been nagging — a tight rear shoulder, a stubborn mid-back spot — our deep tissue massage on a rest day digs it out, while our shoulder & rotator cuff session goes deeper on the single most important surfing joint.
